Tips for you Dogs Outdoor Playtime.

It’s a fact, dogs need outdoor playtime but unfortunately many dogs are not getting enough of it. Not giving your pet enough playtime, indoors or outdoors, can have serious effects on the physical and mental health of your furry friend. These include behavioural problems, irritability (which can lead to extra aggression), depression and overall boredom and laziness. How can you make the most out of your dogs outdoor playtime? Here are some tips from Pet Coach.

Like humans, dogs are social animals and love playing with their humans. Don’t leave your pet alone outside for an extended amount of time. There are a lot of ways you can get involved in your dogs playtime, play a game of fetch or run around the dog park with them. Dogs left alone to play will find their own ways to entertain themselves and many of these are disruptive behaviours such as digging up your yard and barking. Also dogs who are left alone in a yard can be easy targets for shady characters who may want to steal your family friend. When you are out with your dog, make sure the stay with you, whether that is by way of a play pen, fenced in yard/park or leash. No matter how well trained or friendly your dog is, you don’t know how other dogs or people may react to your dog. Keeping them contained is not only the best way to ensure their safety but is also a requirement under the City of Toronto Municipal Code.

Identification

Make sure your pet always has identification, with your name and contact information, on them in the form of a tag or microchip. That way, if your dog is ever lost, the person who finds your pet will be able to contact you for a happy reunion. Did you know that at Muddy Paws we can create a tag for you? Come into the store and ask about our tag engraving services.

Play Safe

Make sure your dog has all they need for a safe playtime such as water and shade. You should also avoid outdoor play during the hottest times of the day in the summer to prevent heat stroke. Also make sure that your pet is bundled up against the cold in the winter. At Muddy Paws we sell a number of items to help your dog stay safe including portable water bowls, jackets, sweaters and booties.
